Reducing 1.6% Clinker Content through Real-Time Predictions

"alcemy was the main driver for our clinker factor reduction. Before, when seeing low 2-day compressive strength, we often increased clinker for the security feeling; these 'playing it safe' decisions are reduced when you see accurate strength predictions in alcemy that confirm everything will be on target."

— Manuel Pons, Molins Quality Manager

Key Results

alcemy digitizes and automates the continuous process of reviewing and adjusting fineness and recipe setpoints. Before alcemy, the Molins team made these recipe adjustments manually. Now, they simply define an operating range and let alcemy manage the control. Additionally, alcemy provides an always up-to-date single source of truth, bringing fineness targets, steering adherence, and strength predictions together in one place. Improving communication and decision-making, these automations enable the lab team to save around 8 hours per week.

alcemy continuously updates its predictions based on the XRD, XRF, and PSD data from the hourly finished mill samples. From these inputs, the model calculates the resulting impact on early and late strength, then works "backwards" to determine the exact fineness needed to bring the strength back to target. This automated approach delivered significantly reduced target deviation within the first 5 months of operation.

alcemy enabled Molins to make more substantial recipe adjustments by providing finer-grained control and higher confidence in the process. The team became more confident about low clinker / high limestone and pozzolan levels. In addition to a fineness setpoint, Molins now also receives a C3S setpoint, regularly checked before executing recipe changes. The reduced clinker across recipes was validated against the 2025 clinker budget, resulting in 1.6% less clinker across all cements and more than 7x ROI.
